Screenshot Tutorial for Macs, or "How To Report Bad People"

Postby MysteryScienceTaylor » Sun Apr 04, 2010 7:16 pm

Introduction

Hi there, everyone! For those of you who don't know me, I'm Taylor, I'm a girl, and it's nice to meet you. (shakes your hand) Now, if you're like me, you're awesome and you use a Mac. However, as awesome as we Mac users are, we're not free from the oily, reaching tendrils of those evil-doers that lurk around every corner of the offline trades, the IRC, and the forums of PBA. That's right: the SCAMMERS. There are plenty of them out there, but they're not entirely unstoppable. If you can provide evidence of someone breaking the rules, you can show it to me or any other staff member, and hopefully, we'll be able to stop them before they cause too much damage! ^^ How do I provide said evidence, you ask? I don't have a PrntScr/SysRsq button like all the Windows users do (basically an automatic screenshot button for PCs). Well, never fear. Here's my tutorial on how to take a screenshot on a Mac.

DISCLAIMER:The screenshots provided in the following tutorial are not of real scammers. They are fake, but they provide examples of the most common types of scams.NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR PASSWORD TO ANYONE.

Step 1: Educate Yourself

Before you go off reporting everyone who looks at you the wrong way, you really should acquaint yourself with the rules. The rules of PBA can be found here: http://pbaforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=854 From there, you can find a list of the current staff members so that if you do find yourself faced with a scammer, you'll know who to tell. Let's say someone sent you a private message that looked something like this:

Image

In this message, we can see that the user is offering credits in exchange for account information, a sure-fire sign of a scammer. The rules will tell you that users can't transfer credits between one another. So, now that we've spotted a bannable offense, WHAT DO WE DO? ...We get proof.

Step 2: Taking a Screenshot

On a Mac, there are two different ways to take a screenshot, but they both have very similar shortcuts:

Image

This method will take a picture of the entire computer screen. I would only use this shortcut if the evidence really takes up the whole page (which it can in some IRC private messages). Otherwise, the picture can turn out to be unnecessarily big. You could always go back and cut it down to size in a photo-editing program later, but it's much easier to use the second shortcut instead.

Image

This method will let you make a custom-sized screenshot, eliminating the need to cut the picture down to size later on. After you enter the shortcut, your cursor will turn into a little crosshair. You can use it to click and drag a rectangle around the evidence.

Image

By default, your pictures will be named "Picture 1", "Picture 2", and so on and so forth. To rename a picture, just click on its icon and press Enter. It will then allow you to type in a different name underneath it.

Step 3: Uploading your Pictures

After you've collected your evidence, it's time to get it into a format where you can show a staff member. This is where all those helpful photo-hosting websites come in handy. The majority of them are free, and it only takes a few minutes to create an account with one of them if you don't have one already. The two easiest and best sites that I use are Photobucket and Tinypic. After you've made an account, it's time to upload your picture.

Image

Click browse to find your picture. Once it's entered in the bar, click Upload.

Image

The next page you see should look something like this. Scroll down a little...

Image

...And you'll find the link that you can copy/paste onto the forums or IRC to show a staffer the evidence that you got! HOORAY!

I really hope that this has helped!
