GIMP FAQs

Postby Metamence » Sun Nov 15, 2009 4:57 am

Eh, I don't know if this is necessary but it might, or will help some people.

It's not done now, but people are welcome to contribute?
A few tip of GIMP.

How to make a new layer?
A: On the Layers Dialog (All your layers and such, with the Layer Mode and etc), click on the very left icon, which depicts a piece of
paper with the corner folded.

How to duplicate a layer?
A: On the Layers Dialog, there is an icon with two pictures next to each other, somewhat similar to Windows Minimize icon.

Help, on this tutorial, it says Filters> Colors> and so on but I can't find it?
A: Since you can't find Colors or whatever in the Filters menu, they're probably using an outdated version of GIMP. Just act like the
Filters doesn't exist, and move on to the next thing, which in this case is Colors.

How do I change the spacing of a brush?
On the Brushes tab (It has all your brushes. You can find your Brushes Tab by clicking on the Configure this Tab icon, click on Add
Tab> Brushes), on the bottom there's the spacing bar, drag the bar or change the number to the spacing you want. This is for the
distance between the brushes you drag on your canvas. Like say, I had a Circle brush, a lower Spacing means the circles would
be close to each other, and a higher spacing would mean that the circles would be more far away.

What are gradient maps?

They change the colors of the layer you're working on to the gradient's colors. You can access Gradient Maps by going to Colors>
Map> Gradient Map. G-Maps are good for coloring banners by making a New From Visible, change the gradient colors, make a
Gradient Map, and set that on any Layer Mode of your preference.

How do I change the Layer Mode like Overlay or Screen or Opacity or what are they?
They are on the Layers Dialog. The Layer Mode changes how that layer that's active interacts with the other layers. The Opacity
makes it more transparent. To change the Layer Mode, there should be something called "Mode: Normal/Insert Layer Mode here". There should be a drop down menu icon, and click on it. Then click on your preferred layer mode. To change the Opacity, there should be something called "Opacity:". Drag the Slider, input your preferred Opacity (O-100), or click the arrow icons.

Can you describe some or all of the layer modes?
Normal: Doesn't edit the image at all.
Dissolve: Makes the layer dissolve each time you lower the opacity.
Multiply: It's sort of like a darker Overlay or Grain Merge, making the layer blend in with the below layers.
Divide: It's like an Overlay that's high contrast.
Screen: It lightens the image, and erases the black, making it a little faint if it's dark. Good for C4D's or effects.
Overlay: It blends the layers together, with the colors, and makes that layer a tad faint, like I've said before, blending them.
Dodge: It's like a high-contrast Screen.
Burn: I haven't used this setting that much, but it makes it darker, like an extremely dark contrast Overlay.
Hard Light: A lighter-ish Overlay like feel.
Soft Light: Same exact thing as an Overlay.
Grain Extract: Like an Overlay that's dark, but it inverts the colors.
Grain Merge: Same as a Grain Extract, but it doesn't invert.
Difference: I can't really explain it, but it's like a weird coloring of the images.
Addition: Like a brighter Screen.
Subtract: I can't say for sure, since I haven't played with it, but it feels like a Grain Extract to me.
Darken Only: A more darker Screen in my opinion.
Lighten Only: A more fainter-like Screen.
Hue: Changes the color to the layer of the one getting 'Hue'd'.
Color: Like Hue, but it makes it look more Posterized like.
Value: It turns it into some parts like Rainbow looking things (On my test render, coughoptimusprimecough, and my test layer, coughaprintscreenofwindows,), and I don't really know about the mechanics of this setting.

How do I see what my animation looks like?

Go to Filters> Animation> Playback.

How do I animate?

Have all your layers, which act like frames, save it as GIF, save it as an animation, and the rest is straightforward.

How do I "render"?
Use the Paths Tool, make an outline of the desired thing you want to cut out, click on Selection from Path, or hit enter, and you'll
have a selection. Invert the selection (Ctrl+ I, or Select>Invert) and delete, which deletes the background.

How do I smudge?

On your Toolbox, there's an icon of a finger pointing at the bottom left, that's the smudge tool. To use it, select a brush, and drag your mouse over your canvas.

How do I Burn or Dodge?

It's right next to the Smudge tool in the toolbox. Click the icon that appears to be black soot in a bottle?
Now on the "Type", there should be Dodge and Burn. Click on the circle to what you want to do.
Drag the mouse over your canvas to use it. Remember, Dodge is lighten, and Burn is to Darken.

Help, that window that I always have, other than the toolbox or canvas, is gone?

Go to Windows> and right below Toolbox, there should be that missing window.

How do I make a brush?
First make an image of what you want. Then save it as a GBR, and a window should pop up. Give it a name of your liking. Then put it in your brushes folder.

How do I make a colored brush?
So, you might have made a brush, but it doesn't change colors when you brush it, and your FG color was, say red. Open up your brush, go to Image>Mode>Grayscale, and save it. It should change colors depending on your FG color.

How do I access my brushes/patterns/etc folder?
Go to Edit> Preferences.
There on the Folders, click on the +, and there should be all these Brushes, Palettes,Patterns, etc. Click on them, click on the Folder, and copy and paste in the Run (Start Menu in Windows>Run) and it'll open the folder it's located in.

What's a C4D?
It's a 3D abstract-ish render made in Cinema 4D. I use them for effects and change the layer mode to something to Screen.

How do I open up an image from the internet?
Either right click it, copy, and paste it into GIMP. Or you can right click it, go to PROPERTIES, and copy the image URL. Then go to File>Open Location (In GIMP), and paste the URL in there. Click on Open, and it should load up.

Who is Wilbur?
He's GIMP's mascot. He's the smiley raccoon, pig, bear, wolf looking thing.

How do I rotate an image?
Take the Rotate Tool (It's the icon of a box, and another box turning), and use that. It's quite easy to do so. Or you can go to Layer/Image>Transform> and whatever you want to do.

How do I make something Transparent?
Go to Layer>Transparency>Add Alpha Channel. Now use some deletion tool (Be it a Fuzzy Select tool and deleting, or an Eraser) and good for you, you've made transparency.

when you duplicate a render, then smudge it, set it to Overlay above the normal render it get's brighter. Duplicate the smudged layer again it gets even brighter. But if you do it too many times it'll turn out smudged and it doesn't look very good.

Depends on what render you use, some renders color's make it brighter or darker. Why would you even duplicate it many times?
